Week 1: Civil engineering video, Bridges, available
from www.hearlihy.com for $49.95. As
an alternative, any video on hand dealing with some aspect of civil
engineering will work fine. Students probably need a worksheet to keep focus
for the video duration.
-
Week 2: Dial indicator to measure deflection to an applied
transverse stress. A magnetic base to anchor the dial indicator to a metal
surface is worth the money as it needs to be very stable. Search the web for
best price. I got one with a plastic case for about $30. As an alternative,
you can fabricate some holding mechanism that firmly mounts some digital
calipers or other measuring device.
-
Week 2: Material to characterize. Search your area phone
book for a metal scrap house or metal manufacturer. I got a 4' long,
½" x 1" bar stock in aluminum and steel for $12 each. These metal
samples can be re-used for future classes. Wood samples can be purchased at
a local hardware store. These may get broken.

Weeks 3 through 6 are based on material from Dr. Stephen
Ressler's book, Designing and Building File-Folder Bridges.
This entire book in .pdf format can be downloaded now (about 25 MB). You can also purchase the book from the
U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) for $26.50 per copy. The GPO stock
number is 008-022-00328-2. Order online at http://bookstore.gpo.gov,
by telephone at (866) 512-1800 (toll free)

Mr. Kawanami,
"With regard to your question about using my material in the Workforce
Silicon Valley project, the answer is "yes, absolutely." The book and
software are in the public domain. I created them to serve education and
the engineering profession. You may use them in any way that might do some
good."

Week 4: Two pulleys and some clothesline for the Forces
attention grabber. Get from the local hardware store for under $10.
-
Week 5: Each team will need bridge construction materials
listed in the Lab Procedure document. Most of this is common to school
supply cabinets. The exception is the bridge blueprint. You might have to
piece the blueprint together after downloading, and then get a single sheet
copy from a local copy house. These typically run less than $2 per copy.
-
Week 6: The testing machine is a simple lever device. You
should build your own. Any type of wood will be adequate and material should
cost less than $10.
-
Week 6: Two Quick Grip clamps to secure the tension bars to
the testing machine. These cost about $5 to $10 each and can be purchased at
a local hardware store.
