civil structures

The art and science of bridge building has helped man overcome his most formidable physical barriers (except rush hour traffic!)

In the Structures and Analyses module, students will be introduced to the fascinating discipline of bridge design and construction. After considering the opportunities in civil engineering careers and surveying some historical highlights, the class members will use their considerable mathematics and science aptitudes to design, build, evaluate, and test basic bridge structures.

The units and lessons within the module are:

  • Great civil structures (Research and Presentation Project)

  • Materials Terminology

  • Materials Characterization Lab (Experimentation, Plotting Results, and Calculations)

  • Bridge Design with PC Simulation

  • Structural Analysis I (Trigonometry, Vectors, Equilibrium, and Reactions)

  • Structural Analysis II (Free Body Diagrams, Force Calculations, and Statics)

  • Bridge Construction

  • Truss Factor of Safety

  • Truss Characterization Lab (Testing Machine Theory, Experimentation, and Plotting Results)

  • Weight Test Constructed Bridge
