computer repair module syllabus

Course Objective: The objectives of the course are to provide hands on computer repair and troubleshooting experiences along with basic training in the WinTel platform (DOS, Windows 95/98/2000 on donated IBM clone computers with Pentium ll or older CPUs). Students will be an effective tech workforce on campus, and have the opportunity to pass the A+ Certification Exam.

Course Description: The Computer Repair and Maintenance course was created at Prospect H.S., Saratoga, CA through StRUT (Students Recycling Used Technology) with the help of a grant from Intel and the Calif. DOE. The course is one year (2 semesters), standards based, and directed at 9-12th grade students. It qualifies as an elective for high school graduation and has the potential of becoming a UC a-g elective (for Calif. universities credit). The course utilizes a comprehensive textbook, The Complete Computer Repair Textbook. The instructor emphasizes safety, ethics, and health issues. Students will develop note taking and oral presentation skills. The high points of the year are:

    1. Annual StRUT competition in May (Prospect H.S. has done well in years past).

    2. At year’s end all students formally present a final project of interest (using Power Point – parents and industry invited – videotaped).

    3. Some students take and pass the A+ Certification Exam.
