Engineering Design

Students will apply steps of the engineering design process to complete an assigned project or one of their own choosing. Students will comprehend engineering design is creative problem solving.

Week 1 Summary: Module overview, engineering design process, product lifecycle and project management, design project assignment (option), class and lab procedures.

Week 2 Summary: Determining needs (problem to be solved). Design criteria and constraints.

Week 3 Summary: This is among the most creative steps. There are usuallly many ways to solve the design problem and inventing new solutions is rewarding.

Week 4 Summary: Prototypes are models of the preferred design. Building high quality prototypes is expensive, so the designers need to use other methods to prove the design.

Week 5 Summary: Students will understand the whys and hows product testing to ensure designs meet requirements.

Week 6 Summary: Students will comprehend the importance of documenting the design so that someone can build and use the product. Documentation usually includes computer-aided drawings and various specifications.
