Lesson Design Template

A.  Class or Team for Active Learning

5th & 6th Period Science

B.  Core Standard(s) Activated (we could list several of these for every lesson)

Communicating Effectively

C.  Content Standard (if more than one content standard applies to this project, please include it)

Explain relationships between the hydrosphere, regional climates & human activities

D.  Adult Role Situation (this is your scenario or project idea)

Write a 1-hour news documentary on severe weather for the American Telecommunications Network.  Divide documentary into 3 sections (blizzards, hurricanes, and tornadoes).  Each segment should describe the phenomena of what occurs to create each storm and a plan for  safety in the event they are in one of these storms. (as a teacher, you may modify this scenario to be as intense or simple as you like, this is just a basic idea to get you started)

E.    Economic Realm

(this is your career cluster or insert the language you are used to using here)

Services

F. Learning Targets (objectives or goals, insert the language you are used to using here)

·        Students will know how to protect themselves from all 3 types of storms

·        Students will know the developmental process for all 3 types of storms

G.   Assessment Criteria

·        Accurately describe the steps to safety for all 3 types of storms

·        Accurately describe the development and the contributing factors for all 3 types of storms

H.  Active Learning Strategies

Portfolio (script, story board)

Rubrics

Activities/Resources/Materials (correlated by activity)

J.  Activity

1.      Break students into teams of three (or 6) and assign roles (tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards)

2.      Separate students into specialties (tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards) and allow them to research (2 class periods and/or personal time)

3.      Students report back to original groups and develop story board

4.      Students  write script (2 class periods and/or personal time).

5.      Students give project to teacher

K.  Resources/Materials Needed

·        Local weatherman for in-school visit (for weather explanation)

·        Local television new producer (for script and story board development)

·        Internet access

·        Time for library

·        Text book
